Lab Syllabus
Lab Manual
Beck, Hughes and O’Donovan, Microorganisms, A Laboratory Manual
Please bring your lab manual to each laboratory session.
Attendance
Microbiology laboratory meets ftwice a week (as assigned, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday). Attendance to lab is mandatory.
Note that additional time to work is on "Odentification of Unknown Assignment" will be required between the dates of 10/29-11/13.
Quizzes, Assignment and Exams
Quizzes are administered in the first 10 minutes of class. Arriving late to lab after a quiz has been administered will automatically result in a grade of “ZERO” on the quiz.
There are two practical exams (midterm and final) The practical midterm exam will be administered halfway through the semester and a non-comprehensive, practical final exam will be administered at the end of the semester. Exam questions may include short answers, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, short answers, identification and practical questions.
There will be no laboratory quizzes or exam make-ups. Quizzes or Exam grades will not be dropped.
Academic Dishonesty
Anyone caught cheating on any quiz or exam will receive a 0% and notification will be sent to the Dean of Students.You can be dropped from the class with a failing grade for plagiarism and/or cheating.
Note that additional time outside scheduled lab times will be required in order to complete your unknown assignment.

Safety Rules
SAFETY RULES
The following list of safety regulations must be followed without exception.
- Absolutely no eating, drinking, smoking or applying cosmetics in the laboratory!
- Always wash your hands before and after completing your laboratory work.
- Leave hats, coats, books, bags and other items on the coat and book- rack. Cluttered walkways and lab benches are dangerous.
- Do not place anything in your mouth that has come in contact with infectious materials.
- No open toed shoes, i.e. no sandals, flip-flops, slides, etc
- Report all injuries and/or accidents immediately to the instructor, no matter how small, there are no penalties for accidents, provided they are reported promptly.
- Dispose of biohazard materials properly. Disposable and broken glass items should be placed in the designated glass box. All other trash should be placed in trash cans. Used test tubes should be placed in the designated area.
- Spills of bacterial cultures- Wear gloves, mop up with bleach 5%. Dispose in
autoclave bag. Wash your hands, call for the instructor.
- Broken glassware- Must not be handled directly by hands; use brush and dustpan
- Pippeting- When pipetting, use rubber pipette fillers or safety pipette pumps
Do not “mouth”-pipette!
- Always replace the caps on reagents, solution bottles and bacterial cultures
- Pay attention to warnings by your instructor
- Wipe down lab bench with disinfectant before and after each lab period to minimize contamination
- Aseptic Burners are a fire hazard; long hair must be pulled back to avoid burn hazards.
- Familiarize yourself with locations of eye-wash station and sinks
- Fire extinguisher is located by door entrance.
