Lab Syllabus
Laboratory manual:
Microbiology Laboratory for Food Sciences by G.R. Vela
NOTE: Do not buy a used laboratory manual
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory. If you miss a lab, you are responsible for the information covered that day. There are no make-up labs. If you are absent more than twice during the semester, you may be academically dropped with the grade of WF for non-attendance.
Quizzes and Exams
Quizzes are administer in the first 10 minutes of class. Arriving late to lab after a quiz has been administered will automatically result in a grade of “ZERO” on the quiz.
There will be no laboratory quiz or exam make-ups.
Notebooks
Notebooks are daily assignment related to the experiment that are conducted in the labs. They may consist of any combination of the following:
- Drawing and sketches
- Questions to be answered located at the end of each lab exercise
- Demonstration of skills or identification of structures
Late notebooks will be penalized 10 percent per day late. (late work is anything turned in after the lab period ends on the due date)
Students must be present in order to complete daily assignments.
Lab Policies
Students must follow all safety rules and guidelines for the laboratory.- See “Safety Rules” for additional lab policy information. Failure to comply may result in removal from the laboratory and the assignment of an absence for that lab period.
All work is to be done independently unless explicitly instructed otherwise. You can be dropped from the class with a failing grade for plagiarism and/or cheating. You can also be dropped for three or more unexcused absences. Students more than 10 minutes late to lab will be considered absent for that day for attendance grade. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of all university policies and deadlines for dropping courses or withdrawing.
POLICY ON DISABILITIES ACCOMODATION
The Department of Biological Sciences complies with the American with Disabilities Act in making reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. If you have a qualifying disability as defined by the ADA and would like to request accommodations, please see the instructor by the 4th day of class.

Eye protection and mask should be worn when conducting experiments that create splashes
or aerosols
- Dispose of biohazard materials properly, do not throw refuse of any kind into the sink
- Bleach your bench before and after each experiment
- No unauthorized person is allowed in the Medical Bacteriology Laboratory.
- The inoculating needle should be heated until red-hot before and after use. Always flame
