Lab Syllabus
Lab Text & Supplies:
Genetics Laboratory Manual (purchased at Copy Pro Copy Center) and Concepts of Genetics by William S. Klug & Michael R. Cummings, 8th edition. You will need a shoebox, combination lock, and spiral notebook for fly experiment.
Attendance:
Attendance in lab is mandatory. Attendance is expected for all class periods and will be taken at the start of class. Unexcused absences or tardiness will count towards a ‘0’ for that day’s quiz. There are no make up labs! You must stay for the entire lab to get a quiz grade for that day! If you miss two or more labs, you will be dropped from the lab course section.
Course Objectives:
Genetics laboratory is designed to cover key laboratory techniques in the field of genetics. The experiments conducted in the Genetics laboratory will examine basic principles of transmission genetics, cytological genetics, and molecular genetics. This lab also requires a basic understanding of how to write a lab report and function as part of a laboratory investigation team.

Assignments turned in late will be penalized 10% points per day including weekends and holidays.
Quizzes can only be made up if you have an excused absence.
Lab Rules:
No food or drink allowed in the lab.
Students are responsible for leaving their workstations clean and orderly for the next lab section. Observation of lab safety and cleanliness—20 pts. The TA should NOT have to pick up after you. Please leave the lab, as it was when you entered. Points are accumulated per individual, but a whole group can be penalized for their group member’s misconduct.
A student may leave the lab after completing all work and checking out with his/her lab instructor.
All cell phones must be turned off during class
You will participate in class activities and discussions, but not dominate any discussion or activity, nor will you negatively impact your colleague’s participation. Negative participation will be dealt with immediately and in private.
You will be prepared to participate in class by having read the assigned readings, and completed any assigned tasks before the class meeting.
Quizzes and exams must be taken when scheduled.
Policy on Academic Misconduct:
Cheating will NOT be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating (all forms) will receive a grade of zero and the matter will be turned over to the Dean of Students.
Lab groups:
You will work in groups of 3-4. Groups will be assigned at the beginning of the course. All group members are expected to contribute equally to the lab work. It is the responsibility of group members to schedule out of lab work so that all members do their share of the work
Collaboration and Plagiarism:
During the semester you will be generating data as a group, but the actual production of lab reports or any other written work is to be an individual effort and not collaboration with anyone else. We have had instances in the past in which identical lab reports were submitted. These students were given a grade of zero for their reports and were reported to the Dean of Students. You will be risking possibly failing the course and a report of academic dishonesty on you record. The lab coordinator and lab instructors do note the style of writing, it is usually obvious when someone is plagiarizing due to the change in the style of sentence structure.
The following is taken from the Policies Chapter under “Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.” UNT Undergraduate Catalog 2003-2004.
- Academic dishonesty - Cheating
The term ‘cheating’ includes, but is not limited to:
- Use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations;
- Dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying other assignments;
- The acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a faculty or staff member of the university;
- Dual submission of a paper or project, or resubmission of a paper or project to a different class without express permission from the instructor(s); or
- Any other act designed to give a student an unfair advantage.
- Academic dishonesty - Plagiarism
The term ‘plagiarism’ includes, but is not limited to:
- The knowing or negligent use by paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear
acknowledgment; and
- The knowing or negligent unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials.
Policy on Disability Accommodations:
The Department of Biological Sciences, in cooperation with the Office of Disability Accommodations, complies with Section 504 the Americans with Disabilities Act in making reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. Please present your written request before the 12th class day so that necessary arrangements may be made.
*You may attend another lab only after permission from your lab instructor and you may only switch labs 1 time during the semester.
